The 70-year-old Royal Grill Restaurant, located in the Royal Hotel in Durban's historic city centre, has been transformed to expose opulent textures, luxurious finishes and lavish decor. All of which will be revealed to guests this month presenting diners with the finest dining experience with haute cuisine.

This venue has had a complete facelift, but retains the essence of grand days with original high ceilings, dark wood balustrades and stained glass effects mixed with new crisp white linen, silver and crystal chandeliers, all redone with a modern take to create a magically light atmosphere.

Interior designer Andrew Irving from Interdeco, achieved a modern, fresh, airy look and feel, touched with the signature high standard ethics of the Royal Hotel, preserving the rich classic ambiance with light, natural colours and royal style, accentuated with grand piano melodies playing softly in the background.

The dining in itself is an experience of bygone pampering with a complimentary sherry and canaps in the lounge before being seated. Commencing with the chef's amuse bouche, the menu is a tribute to old-time classics such as the Caesar salad, the chicken and prawn curry, baked cheesecake, and a celebration of new additions such as Norwegian salmon gravadlax, roast duck and grilled ostrich, rack of lamb, lamb shank, soul meuniere and vanilla crme brȗle, prepared by the Royal's chef, Adam Saviour.

Guests are waited on by a captain, a waiter, a wine steward and a busser, all crisply dressed in white.

The Royal Grill offers a superior wine list that complements every dish on the menu and concludes the dining experience with freshly brewed coffee, delicious creamy chocolate, petit fours and cigars served in the lounge.

The Royal Grill has hosted Cecil John Rhodes, H.G. Wells, Rider Haggard, Marlene Dietrich, Mark Twain, Prince Alfred, Queen Elizabeth II, Margaret Thatcher, F.W. de Klerk, Mangosuthu Buthelezi and Nelson Mandela.
