A new 44-suite accommodation block at the Shelley Point Hotel on the Cape West Coast 170 km north of Cape Town will be officially opened on May 1.

Vanessa Northing, marketing director for Dale Capital, now a major shareholder in the project, said that the addition will position the hotel in "a whole new ballpark as regards conferencing and functions".

This is because, with a total of 88 suites, the new hotel will be able to accept conference and other groups of up to 160 people. Already, said Northing, the conferencing and functions provide 60% or more of the turnover at Shelley Point and, although the tourist intake increases month by month, conferences and functions numbers are also rising.

The hotel achieved a 56% occupancy rating over the holiday period which Dale Capital regards as highly satisfactory for a venue that went into full functioning only last October.

The new suites are in most respects like their predecessors with some small but significant changes. Half of them are simplex, half duplex, giving the new complex three above-ground levels and a parking basement which links in with that of the first block.

The simplex suites have a 64m2 floor area and the duplex 72m2. All units have balconies and many have views of the Britannia Bay coastline and the golf course. A big attraction of all the duplex suites is that the upper blocks are open to the Lucas Quality Thatchers beamed and thatched roofing.

Desmond O'Connor, Shelley Point's new GM, says that in all his 20 years experience as a hotelier he has never come across suites so ideally suited to both holiday-makers and conference delegates.

The decor has a nautical flavour with the predominant colours being blue and white. Each unit has 60m2 of sandstone tiles, a king-size double bed and a living-room couch which can be converted into a bed. All are equipped plasma screen TVs and kitchenettes.

The bathrooms have screens which can fold back making the TVs visible from the baths.

Allan Burgoyne, Shelley Point's resident director, who has had some 30 years involvement with the building sector, said that the standard of work which has been achieved on all the Shelley Point contracts managed by the contractor Herman Theart of Ekosto 1901 has been exceptionally high.
