Hostex Cape starts next week, running from Monday to Wednesday at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. This year promises a full agenda, including 220 exhibitors spread across one hall. It is a one-stop shop for the latest hospitality solutions, innovation, entertainment, educational demonstrations, networking opportunities and chance to ensure your establishment is ready for the economic upswing and business beyond the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

Lynn Chamier, exhibition director of Hostex Cape, says: "We've added some new features to the show to complement our existing and very popular attractions of the SA Chefs Experience and HomeGrown/SME Village. Visitors can now enjoy some wine tasting, source everything they need to go green and check out the hottest pizza creations, in between visiting the exhibition stands, many of which are exhibiting products and services that will help hotels, restaurants, caterers, B&B owners, etc. to meet the demands of the 2010 tourists."

Management and staff of Hotel & Restaurant, media partners to Hostex Cape, will be out in full force and eager to chat to visitors and exhibitors about the latest news in the industry. The March issue of Hotel & Restaurant, which contains the full list of exhibitors plus a floor plan, will be distributed at the show.

The SA Chefs Experience, presented by Nestle Professional and equipment sponsored by Vulcan President, will host various culinary demonstrations, competitions, and the latest foodservice products among other events. The programme provides something for chefs from entry level to seniors.

Members of the South African National Culinary Team will be in attendance. There is a chocolate demonstration by Jean Marc Bernelin, advisory chef for the Asia Pacific Region of Barry Callebaut. Other events taking place during the three days will showcase the creativity and convenience of products from McCain, Hudson & Knight, Nestle Professional, Spekko Rice, Unilever Foodsolutions, Maggi Premium Sauces, Pillsbury and Fruit & Veg City.

On the competition front, visitors can watch chefs, from juniors to professionals, pit their culinary skills against one another in the following competitions:

- City & Guilds Junior Top Chef Competition (daily from 10:00 to 10:45)

- Restaurant and Hotel Competition (Monday from 17:10 to 18:00, Tuesday from 17:00 to 17:40 and Wednesday from 11:35 to 12:10)

- Spekko Rice Three Meal Extravaganza (Wednesday from 13:35 to 14:35)

Prize giving for most of the competitions takes place at 17:00 on Wednesday.

If you are looking into "greening" the operations at your property or finding new ways to conserve resources, visit the The Greenstuff Village and Green Hotel. Alongside an exhibition area of suppliers of green products and services, the Greenstuff Village features a Green Hotel, which consists of a series of rooms typically found in a hotel with a comprehensive collection of green products.

This is the first time the hospitality industry will be able to experience a hotel that is green from floor to ceiling, inside and outside, furnished, equipped, serviced and operated with only eco-friendly products listed in the Hotelstuff directory.

"We've aimed to showcase at least one green example of all major hospitality products," says Lorraine Jenks, environmental consultant to the hospitality industry and owner of Hotelstuff.co.za, the online directory of hospitality suppliers.

"This showcase is about showing hoteliers how easy it is to go green and the wide variety of items that are as eco-friendly as they can find. Nothing is 100% green, but we owe it to our children's children, to purchase everything we use with care," she maintains.

Some of the items on display include toxin-free cleaning chemicals, organic toiletries, natural carpets, bamboo flooring, fair trade coffees, energy reducing equipment, certificated kitchen appliances, water saving devices, waste management, eco friendly bedding, forest certified furniture and edible juice tumblers.

Greenstuff staff will be giving guided tours of each typical hotel room to summarise what makes each product green, and full details on all items are available in brochures and on the Greenstuff website.

"Our mission is to keep it simple, to demystify the jargon, to encourage people to make educated choices and think before they buy," adds Jenks.

The HomeGrown SME Village once again showcases South African goods and services and niche service providers.

Each of the 220 exhibitors has something special to show to visitors to improve efficiencies, boost revenue and provider greater choice and services to guests.

Hostex Cape takes place from 8 to 10 March 2010 at Cape Town International Convention Centre, from 10:00 to 18:00 daily. Pre-registration can be completed on www.hostexcape.co.za. The website also has a daily programme featuring highlights of the show.

No under 18′s will be allowed access to the show and students will only be allowed access on Wednesday 10 March, with the prior approval of the organisers.
