Johann Roos heads up kitchen at Sheraton Pretoria Hotel

Johann Roos has been appointed executive chef of the Sheraton Pretoria Hotel, situated opposite the Union Buildings, from 1 March. The hotel's food and beverage offering is tailored to target its top-end guests, including local and international politicians.

Roos has worked at a number of Johannesburg hotels, including the Protea Balalaika Hotel, the Carlton Hotel, Gold Reef City Hotel & Casino, Southern Sun Holiday Inn Plaza. He is also a licensed National Qualifications Assessor for the Hospitality Industries Training Board.

During his career, he was involved in a South African Food Festival presented at the Sheraton Hotel and Towers in Santiago, Chile.

Some highlights of Roos's career include being one of the first chefs to cater for Nelson Mandela in 1990, after the release of the former president from prison. He has also cooked for Dr. Madeleine Albright from the US, Mangosuthu Buthelezi, King Goodwill Zwelentini, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Tina Turner and the American blues rock trio ZZ Top.

Roos is passionate about training young chefs and passing on his skills and experience and looks forward to further developing his brigade at Sheraton Pretoria Hotel.

The 175-room hotel, headed up by GM Joerg U. Limper, has three restaurants: new a la carte restaurant Via Veneto opened on 22 March and serving international cuisine; revamped Tiffin's Bar and Lounge and Magnolia all-day restaurant. It also has a busy banqueting division that caters for the conferencing facilities as well as 24-hour in-room dining. Guests can also enjoy drinks and snacks on the Union Terrace with clear views across to the Union Buildings and its expansive gardens.

Sheraton is part of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, which has ten brands in its portfolio and has just opened its 1000th hotel: the Sheraton Qiandao Lake Resort located on Qiandao Lake in China.
